The rating system, best I can figure, is just a system of median averages (the sum of all votes divided by the number of votes). JF's list on the side only goes to 2 decimal places, but in reality a lot of these scores probably go much deeper than that - and a difference of 0.00001 could be all that separates the top place from the second (a little extreme, given the number of votes that would require, but you get the idea). The actual odds of two scores being exactly the same are incredibly small (theoretically, it's half the sum of the square of the number of votes each picture received multiplied by the difference between them to 1 against, but I could be wrong about that).
Yes - I'm a numbers guy

*ahem*
As for ratings going up and then down sharply over the course of one day, it's important to remember this is a global site. The update is done at 12am PST (affected by DST) and people like Bondi and myself will probably see the new pics first simply because it's at a more convenient time of day (7pm and 6pm respectively, until Bondi comes off DST). Then, as the hours roll by slowly the rest of the world joins us until the next day and the cycle continues. JF's also set the site up to only allow one vote per user, so it's not exactly easy for one person to mass-vote someone down... though, unfortunately, it's also not impossible (I won't go into detail how, but it's unavoidable). I guess it just means there's a timezone full of ( A ) jerks, ( B ) those without taste, ( C ) the numerically impared, or ( D ) all the above - and it's not this end of the planet 'cause it sounds like the scores are higher when they leave us.

Ooh, I actually read all that.

Very interesting!
So I probably had one time zone who gave me all the high votes, then the hour changed and another time zone came in with different tastes and gave all the low ones. Hehehe.

I must try and convert this naughty timezone.
