in the 1800's Ned Kelly was a bushranger in Australia. He had a gang and they used to rob banks. He kept getting shot so he divised this all over metal armour he used to wear, including a helmet.
After years he finally got caught and as he was on the gallows, about to be hanged, me said... "such is life" and the "eh" bit was just the Canadian joke!

ahhh, always wondered where that phrase came from
if i was in the crowd I woulda said, "let's see that armour save your ass now!"
