Mr Rant:

Ok so when i was holidaying in Europe there was an American lady on our tour. One day we were chatting on the bus when the topic of terrorism came up. Where were we when we heard the news of 9/11? The impact of it in Australia Vs that in America etc etc. It was then I asked her about the Bali Bombings. She looked at me puzzled. She had no idea what i was talking about? I couldn't believe the news networks didn't pick it up, I still refuse to bleieve it?

Exactly one year, one month and one day AFTER 9/11 a popular tourist strip in Bali was bombed my Muslim Extremists. In total over 200 people were killed, including 88 Australians. In Australia we considered this an attack on us directly and it ran only behind 9/11 on death scale. This lady however, had never heard of it!

I was wondering, how many of you in the USA, Canada or even the UK heard of the Bali Bombings in 2002?

well I know it was covered here extensively and I bet it was too in the states but some people don't pay attention to current events much in the first place, especially if it doesn't happen near them. but 9/11 was so heavily saturated in the US culture(rightfully so) that literally everybody had a thorough understanding of it.

If you would have asked her about the London train bombings, she would have likely been equally befuddled.

I hate when people disturb me and i'm watching a movie. I just can't get into the movie afterwards. I was just sitting here watching a flick and the phone rang for me.

yes I heard of it and saw things on it , but I read the USa today news paper as well as the wall stret journal , I cant recall the facts on it nearly as well as I could the  9/11 attacks but I can more then understand your frustration that the news net works  didnt pick it up ,   for the average american that  only reads there local paper  and  maybe watches there nightly news they probably didnt pick up on it  ..

While playing BBall this afternoon I ruptured my achilles tendon. Now I'm on crutches with a cast and I hate it. Got to see a specialist after the long weekend to evaluate exactly what'll need to be done. I make the worst kind of patient because I HATE sitting around and I hate not being able to go full speed when I'm trying to get something done. I'm gonna be one crabby son of a bitch after a couple of weeks of this. But, the rest of the day was nice. (Otherwise, Mrs Lincoln, how'd you enjoy the play?)

Talking about beer in my thread reminded me of a rant of mine.
I HATE beer rating sites.
Many a time I will drink, what I deem, as a pretty good beer.
Sometimes I will look online to see what others thought of it. Can never find what the layman thinks of it. Only what "beer tasters" think of it. And it's almost always a negative review. Always talking about scents of grass and a hint of mushroom aroma, which no one outside of their cliquey community understands anyway.

So I think, well what DO they deem as good beer. It's always a list of obscure brands I can't find anywhere. And it can NEVER be a standard lager or ale. It must always be a barley wine or a bock, or something most people never drink. So I click on the "top list of common beers". Fuck, still no dice. I realize most macro brewed beer isn't the greatest, but there are a lot of smaller breweries that still have large enough distribution to be available in a lot of centres. How bout a list of that.

I tried Rickards White a few weeks ago and thought it was the best tasting beer from a large brewer(Molson) I had tried in a long long time. So I look up some ratings and pretty much none of them are anything above average. I realize it's probably not among the most elite beers brewed in the world, but rate it for what it is. A readily available great tasting beer. It's like saying Honda sucks cuz it's not a Rolls Royce, missing the intended use/purpose and cost of each vehicle.

How bout a list people could actually use? There used to be a guy at beer.com who used to rate beer and he used all the beer tasting lingo and knew his stuff. Some of his higher rated beers were somewhat obscure, but he wouldn't blacklist a mainstream beer, just cuz it was mainstream. Some lagers were meant for a hot summer day and he would rate them as such.

What's happened is that beer has reached the point that it's being judged like a wine, ie. by a bunch of snobs who can't seem to judge a beer on more than one scale. Best tasting, for who? drinkability, wtf, best value, who wants cheap bear if it tastes like piss? I live in a city the has quite a few micro brews,as well as Sam Adams. My advice is; try a beer, if you don't like it, don't finish it. It's not like you're buying a $45,000 bottle of wine. I very rarely follow "expert" advice on what beer is good or bad. I travel all over the US and I'll try any local brew at least once.

Hmm.. I consider myself informed, but if you asked me about the Bali bombings I wouldn't be able to say much besides it sounded familiar. I guess that's the unfortunate thing about living here... the news is so one sided and American focused that unless you really go out of your way to see what's going on in the world... you really won't have a clue.

Tragedies will always have a local following, it's just the way of the world. A splinter in your finger is gonna bother you a lot more than a flood that killed a hundred people in some country in Africa. Unless that's where you happen to be from. It's doesn't mean you're callous or can't have empathy for other peoples suffering, it's just human nature. The more immediate something is the more it demands of your attention.

Working in the liquor game I hear that tripe day in and day out. Apricot tones with a hint of citrus peel. I mean for fuck's sake the average beer drinker wouldn't know what an apricot is let alone what is tastes like.

Maybe we should start our own site Gnappy?

Hmm.. I consider myself informed, but if you asked me about the Bali bombings I wouldn't be able to say much besides it sounded familiar. I guess that's the unfortunate thing about living here... the news is so one sided and American focused that unless you really go out of your way to see what's going on in the world... you really won't have a clue.

an excellent post. I'm all for trying different brews too. I love trying new and different brands, styles etc. Sometimes a couple pints of strong stout are in order and sometimes a case of ice cold mass produced lager is the ticket. I don't like following the "expert's" advice either...just wish there was a website for the blue collar beer drinker.

Well I for one am glad local news still has the ability to show stories of both a local nature and an international one. It shows how insignificant it really is that someone's house burnt down in suburbia but they all got out alive when hundreds get killed in a terrorist attack and it barely rates a mention. Not only a terrorist attack, but an attack bought on by our government's support of the US led invasion of Iraq
