QUOTE(Bobaloo @ Feb 20 2007, 05:26 PM) this discussion was interesting on both sides, but now it's getting silly. It's frustrating trying to have an intelligent discussion with someone who refuses to see things objectively or at the very least acknowledge your side of an issue. It can turn a discussion of two differing opinions into an argument for no good reason. ive had many of those discussion with you as well from my part its called having a intelligent conversation with (you ) a unarmed person .. or could be just killing time and having to have the last word .

QUOTE(Gnappster @ Feb 20 2007, 05:23 PM) Well it's all about the circles you travel in. Very few things travel to all facets of society. If you told me who won the latest nascar race I'd have no idea who that is even though it is wildly popular in many places. Conversely, if I was tlaking about Fedor Emelianenko's last fight, most people would look at me like I was speaking Greek. In the climbing and outdoor enthusiast circles there are probably a lot of hardcore followers that know lots of famous climbers, and names like North Face can benefit from such exposure, even though it may not be as "mainstream" as some other pursuits. But I think we're getting off topic here(surprise!). whew we agree on one thing !!!

QUOTE(little_n_soft @ Feb 20 2007, 07:14 AM) Hehehehe that made me laugh  btw how can you be kicked out of your own bedroom? The cheek of it! Kids should be outside playing in the fresh air rather than watching tv anyway. ;) *sigh* I know! But, it CAN be...has happened before. They're hubby's kids from a previous marriage and they come before me.

QUOTE(ddd35 @ Feb 20 2007, 05:58 PM) whew we agree on one thing !!! that's what Gnappy was trying to say from the beginning, and now you finally see what he's talking about. meanwhile, you're call me unintelligent. I was just stating that Gnappy was trying to explain what you thought was nonsensical by making completely legitimate analogies, and you disregarded him every time. But now that you agree on that one thing, I guess we can just leave it alone.

But I think it will always be necessary to have people out there who can protect others. when it comes to adventuring, though, let's just say that the idiots out there just helping to keep the unemployment rate down.

My two cents, for what it's worth. I know some expeditions have to post a bond before they scale a mountain or hike into no man's land. I'm sure more than a few get forfeited if someone has to come rescue them. But, when someone complains about wasting tax dollars to mount a rescue, it sort of pisses me off. When I think of all the taxes I pay (and that's a separate rant) and how little I get for MY money that SOMEONE else spends, if my ass was stranded on top of a mountain and they refused to come get me because it would cost the taxpayers too much, my attitude would be FUCK YOU. I don't exactly enjoy paying for someones little snot-noses to go to school, but I pay. I'd rather NOT buy some welfare mom a 3lb lobster, but every 3rd of the month, there they are down at the seafood store buying lobster with food stamps. Or here's my favorite: We have a local dairy that sells milk in glass bottles. There's a dollar deposit for each bottle. People, using food stamps, were buying the milk, 20 or 30 bottles at a time, pouring it out in the parking lot, then bringing the bottles back for a dollar each. To buy their smokes and beer, which you can't buy using food stamps. The stores finally had to institute a three bottle limit. If they want to spend some of MY money to rescue ME, I say, hurry up and come get me.

QUOTE(ontippytoes @ Feb 20 2007, 02:40 AM) OK, I still lived at home (with mom & dad), was about 17 years old, and a telemarketer called. I listened to him, started giving him shit, flirting and he flirted back. Well, then I suddenly realized who the fuck he was!! Holy shit...! He was a good friend of mine but we had never talked on the phone before (small town...catch people in town) and when I told him that I knew who he was...he got all embarassed and hung up. LOL!! Wow that is an amazing story. We mostly get companies that have outsourced their telemarketing to Indian Call Centres and I usually just hang up on them as soon as I hear the accent QUOTE(Bobaloo @ Feb 20 2007, 05:26 PM) this discussion was interesting on both sides, but now it's getting silly. It can turn a discussion of two differing opinions into an argument for no good reason. To be honest Bob I didnt even read it. Despite knowing the fact Gnappy would have had some intelligent stuff to say I knew 3d's one eyed-ness would prevail in his posts, and alas it has. He often accuses me of not being open to others opinions and that really his being hypocritical. To have read that back and forth would have been akin to watching Roger Federer play table tennis alone. He's good, but it'd be boring watching him hit that ball continously against the raised other half of the table!

I surf pretty regularly and I am constantly in the water at the beach.
Does 3d's rant mean that if I got attacked by a shark, life savers should not help me because it was my own damn fault for being out there in the first place?

In your rant you reasoned that those partaking in dangerous activities such as mountain climbing etc to not need saving from dangerous conditions that they put themselves in. Now even though a beach is patrolled and safe to swim at, the element of danger is always there because of the unpredictability of nature. Your reasoning was that if there was a shark in the waters I shouldn't warrant help in getting ashore safely because it is my fault im out there in the first place. Do I need to dumb it down a shade?
