If you've ever read up on Bill Waterson, you'll find he's about the least materialistic person you could imagine. They offered him a boatload of money to have "Calvin & Hobbes" t-shirts, coffee mugs, movies, etc, etc,. But he didn't want any of that. For him, Calvin was only ever going to exist as a comic strip.
