Steve Irwin died doing what he loved. It's very unfortunate that he had to go while he was still so young. His wife and children must be devastated with the news. It was a freak accident, I don't think he ever saw it coming. His enthusiasm for his work should inspire anyone who ever watched him.

It's a shitty deal, but at least he was doing something he enjoyed when he died.
I just feel bad for his kids.

A very sad day for all the various animal conservation associations everywhere. But, it WAS bound to happen at some point. You can only tempt fate so much. I practically grew up on a surfboard an have surfed some of he best places in the world. I fullyaccepted the fact that one day I'll probably die in a surfing accident. It's the price you pay for doing the things you love. But, It's still very sad for his wife, kids, and fans as well.

From an Australian point of view the whole "it was bound to happen" line is bullshit! There have been 14, read it 14 recorded cases of Fatal attacks on humans by sting rays... WORLDWIDE!!!! Only the 3rd ever recorded case in Australia. Steve lived and breathed animals and he had people believe he was just some crazy aussie but he was a very very smart man. He knws animals inside and out and he was always safe. This was nothing mroe than a freak accident! I have snorkled among rays before and they are the most placid animals in the ocean.

It is a sad day for his family, for the conservation of the environment and animals worldwide (he gave millions upon millions of money to the cause every year) and for Australia. We have lost arguably our most recognizable faces worldwide...

so i was going to look up some random australian "celebrity" to post their picture and make some not-all-that-witty remark about how shouldn't he/she be the most recognizable face when i came upon this bizarre tidbit...

did you know jackie chan is an australian citizen?

Very sad that he's gone at such a young age, and devasting for his parents, wife and kids.

Although, it was probably more likely that he'd die whilst filming in the water than whilst filming on land. Man is much more adept and fast at moving whilst on land (no water resistance), and therefore a lot easier to keep out of the way of teeth, tails, etc. Anything happening in the water was/is a lot harder to move out of the way quickly, especially when you're a land dweller.

Should the footage be shown to the public though? Assuming the family says yes, I think it should be, not as a macabre horror way of pulling in viewers, but as a demonstration that even those creatures considered docile are dangerous when they need to be and that they should be accorded as much respect as those we deem the most dangerous. I think that's something Steve would have respected and wanted people to see.

Ditto on both counts their Comedy

Denyse... I could not disagree with you more. Would you like to watch the demise of your father, brother, son, husband, cousin, uncle or friend on film? Only those with slightly sick and tiwsted minds would like to see such footage. His manager who was on the shoot with him is the sole owner of ALL Steve Irwin footage and he has vowed that whilst he is alive that footage will never see the light of day, and thank god. Have some respect

What he did say was that if he was filming a Doco and was killed or attacked whilst on the shoot he would not want the cameras to stop rolling... he did not say let's broadcast my demise to billions around the world.

I hope that when you pass away you are afforded with more respect than you give to others

In the sun newspaper it said the footage would never become available and wouldn't be shown, then the next day it said his family have asked for it to be shown because it is what he would have wanted, macabre or not, who can argue with his and therefore his families wishes.

I had not read yet that his family ask for the footage to be released... I find that very interesting

Ultimately his family do not own the footage so it is really a decision for his manager

dont really know, i would have thought it would be the owners of the film, and did he not produce his own films/tv shows, maybe the family "technically" own the footage.

Bondi, I never meant use it in a macabre generate high ratings way, I meant that it if it were to be shown, it should be in a responsible manner, in an educational manner.

And yes, if it had happened to be my family member and they had previously expressed a desire that footage of their death be used to responsibly educate people about the dangers of what they did with their life, then I would be willing to uphold their wishes and ensure that the footage was used in such a manner. That's not to say that it should be shown right now whilst interest in his death is still very high, that would be exploiting the footage, which is not what it should be used for.

There is a vast difference between what your average tabloid media editor and a responsible documentary maker would use the footage for, and it should be used for education, not exploitatively, as we frequently see with all news footage these days.

Agreed!

Also BigMichael I saw an interview with his manager who's production company own EVERY second of footage shot by and for Irwin and he has said the footage will never make the light of day. SO without some dramatic change of heart I dare say it's case closed

I dont follow ausiie news at all , but Im guessing if the family decides that it should be shown , could it be a matter for the courts to decide ? I guarantee here in the states ther would be about 6 lawyers lining up to take on either side of this case and there would be millions either spent or won before the case was done , and then some tabloid would send in a plant and steel the tape anyway and pirate it . Its not a matter of whats right and whats wrong its about the Money here in the state anyway ...
