Bo...just wanted to say "hi" and hope you had a nice Thanksgiving. We sure do miss seeing you around here on a regular basis...but I know you still poke in from time to time.

Hope you are well!

Sorry for being an ignorant Aussie... but what is the history behind Thanksgiving? I know you all eat Turkey and such but is there any historical significance behind the day?

Do any other nations celebrate it?

Thanksgiving is a BIG deal holiday in the US. It is one of the most widely celebrated holidays, when most businesses are closed. It is essentially a harvest festival where thanks is given to God, for those who believe, and commemorates
a festival celebrated when North America was first being colonized by British settlers, religious refugees the "pilgrims". Here's a link to a Wikipedia article
that will tell you more than you probably need to know about his holiday:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanksgiving.

It is probably the least commercial of holidays where family and fellowship take precedence. However, the next day is the kickoff of the Christmas shopping season.

Canada also has a Thanksgiving celebrated in October, although it has different roots.

Here's the roots of Thanksgiving.

After the pilgrims settled the new colonies and the Indians helped them get ready for surviving the coming winter, after the big harvest a celebration feast was cooked up so that all could give thanks for their good fortune for the previous season.

That's basically it.

That's "Pilgrims" with a capital (IMG:http://www.ratemymelons.com/chat/uploads/post-11658-1164718100.gif)

The Pilgrims were a bunch of "my shit don't stink" Fundamentalists who are at least partly responsible for some of the religious conservatism that is going on today in the US. :puke:

Yes, we celebrate it first Monday in October.
We celebrate it the same way but the roots are based on early explorers celebrating a safe journey to Canada(thanks wiki!). Basically I drink all day and then eat a huge meal of Turkey and just about everything else with relatives, then pass out on the couch.

That is all.
