you could try opening them in your photo editor (photoshop, etc.) and try cropping them down into smaller sizes... or you could try saving them as .tif's

Yes, and I just use photoelf. It just asks you what size you want the pic (about 7 standard sizes) and you pick the largest one that will work. 800x something?
