RMM Message Board _ Shoot The Breeze _ My Hometown

Posted by: closeup Oct 17 2006, 02:36 PM

I've been thinking about starting this topic for a while but put it off. Posting a picture of the Longfellow house in another thread reminded me of this. Here's a chance to post photos of your city/town/country that you think the rest of us might find interesting. Maybe a photo of a favorite bar or pub. Whatever. My old avatar of the lighthouse was along those lines. It's one of the most painted and photographed lighthouses in the world.

Here's a photo of the jogging trail around Back Cove:

yes, 40 mins east of Moose Jaw and 4 hours east of Medicine Hat.
Here's a pic of the giant moose, but there is no giant hat in Medicine Hat, at least not that I've seen.

Freeport Indian is about 25-ft. tall. [Ken Balcom, 08/08/2003]

[RA: An earlier chronicle of the Big Indian's owners provided by Chris Madsen: "The F-ing Big Indian. The family version is Freeport Big Indian. Levinsky's, alas, is gone, replaced by a boring ski shop. Before Levinsky's the store was the Casco Bay Trading Company, selling cheap Native American trinkets made in Japan and anything you can name made out of polished cedar. When they moved the Big Indian from its manufacturer to Maine in the '60s, it caused such a sensation on the NJ Turnpike that the state demanded the driver only drive at night."]

We've always refered to this as the B.F.I. (Big Fucking Indian) It's about two miles from L.L. Beans store. When out-of-staters ask how to get to Beans, we'd tell them to turn right at the B.F.I.

The movie was F-ing great. I saw it on opening night with my sister. It was sold out, so we had to buy tickets to some shitty movie and break in because they were checking ticket stubs. we were so late, that we had to sit in THE front row. Even with the sore neck and retinal damage, the movie was still fucking awesome. I laughed my ass off so hard and a few parts that my voice hurt after the movie. Or maybe that was just cuz my head was so far back for so long.

Anyway... great movie. Go see it.

Gnappy, see the cove in the upper right of the bottom picture? There's a clay jogging path around it that's about 3.5 miles long. That's where I do most of my running, it's a great veiw and because it's clay, it hardly ever gets muddy.

I don't like anywhere close to the ocean but I do have a paved path about 5 miles long that circles the lake in town and a really nice park to boot.

It was built in 1858. Those two small pictures are practically useless in showing how ornate and luxurious the interior is. When it was built, the guy who built it was the richest guys in Maine. It's open for tours year round, but really gets a lot of visitors aroung Christmas when the place is decorated for the holidays the same way in would have been in the 1850's. The building has about 95% of the original furnishings/china/rugs/paintings, etc, as when the first owners lived there. Google "Victoria Mansion" if you'd like to see more of it. It's pretty impressive. We have to wear white gloves and booties on our feet before we're even allowed to touch anything.

It was Maury Povitch. It aired yesterday but I missed it. What a fucked-up deal that turned out to be. My brother was going to pick up the furniture from Ikea in New Jersey on the way back to Maine from New Orleans. They wanted to know when he was going to get to the warehouse and on Tuesday morning I told them he'd be there Friday. Thursday eve I get a call saying they can't figure out what furniture to load, can't get ahold of the person who would know and would my brother mind waiting until Monday to pick it up. I said no way was my brother going to sit in Newark NJ for three days because someone can't get their collective head out of their asses and get the stuff out on the loading dock. I told them if the stuff isn't on the dock by 4pm, I was going to instruct my brother to just keep heading north. Which is what happened. The Maury Show was all pissed at me saying my company was already mentioned on the show, they couldn't edit it out. blah, blah, blah. I basically told them they had three days to bring about 10 boxes from the front of the store to the back and they couldn't get it done so too fucking bad. Find someone else to haul the stuff. Anyway, here's where it gets weird. The following Sunday, I'm sitting at my favorite watering hole having a few beers and watching the Patriots on TV. This guy sitting next to me at the bar says to me, practically out of the blue, that his house burned down over the summer. I ask him if he was the one on the Maury show and he says he was. I tell him he's not getting his furniture delivered by me and run the story above by him. He looks disappointed but doesn't really say much. Then, on Monday, I get a call from a guy asking where his Ikea furniture is and when I'm going to deliver it. I'm like, WTF man, didn't I just explain to you yesterday that I wasn't delivering it? He doesn't know what I'm talking about. He's never been in that bar. He's 6'4" and 250lbs. The guy in the bar is maybe 150lbs. I couldn't fucking believe what I was hearing. The guy in the bar totally bullshitted me into beleiving he was the guy on the Maury show. Why would anyone do that? So, to sum it all up, fuck Maury and his shitty show.

If you want something interesting to read, go to "The Smoking Gun" and read about Maury's 100 million sexual harassment suit. One of the associate produces claims that as part of her job she had to tape female guests breasts together to make them appear larger. She got the nickname "The tape lady" She was also told to go into bars and proposition married men and she if she could talk them into having sex with her. She's a 26 year old blonde with big tits so she had quite a few takers. Naturally, it was all being taped. Anyway, that's just two things, there's five pages worth of stuff in the deposition.

Maybe, but if you were out of town, had a few drinks, and she did a little more acting to make it seem real, it wouldn't take much to agree to it. Not saying you would, just saying a lot of guys would. Besides, she probably hit on 20-30 guys, I think the odds are pretty good at least a couple are going to get caught.

I thought I was on a "Candid Camera" type show last year. I show up with my crew to this old farm house ready to spend the day moving them. We start the tour to see what has to be moved and the whole house is jam packed full of junk. Floor to ceiling, every single room has just barely has enough room to walk thru. Most of the furniture is buried in this mess. Then the basement, packed with about 10 truckloads of stuff. The garage-same thing. Barn-full to the brim with useless junk. It would have literally taken 10 guys a week to move this shit. It wasn't Candid Camera, it was just a nutty old lady and her daughter who never threw out a single thing in their whole life. What a clusterfuck.

FROMMER'S TOP DESTINATIONS

2. Tokyo

7. Portland, Oregon

8. Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands

9. Okanagan Valley, British Columbia

11. Zurich, Switzerland

12. Portland, Maine
Portland has joined the likes of Tokyo and Zurich, Switzerland, as a must-see destination for world travelers, at least according to Frommer's, publisher of a series of highly acclaimed travel guides.
On Tuesday, the company announced its top 12 world travel destinations for 2007. Portland is ranked No. 12 on the list, recognized for its culture and restaurants and the ease of exploring the city on foot.
The ranking, and the publicity that will come from being promoted in various guidebooks, should give tourism here a boost, city and tourism officials said.
"Frommer's is a premier tourism and travel guide, and it certainly should increase the awareness of our destination around the world," said Barbara Whitten, president of the Convention & Visitors Bureau of Greater Portland. "We've been on the top ten, top five or top three list for a wide variety of things. This is another affirmation and a great distinction for us."
The list was compiled by the guidebooks' authors and experts and reflects a mix of "surprising, thriving or emerging" travel destinations.
Portland has some pretty heady company.
Portland's waterfront and trail network shares billing with the Caribbean getaway of Virgin Gorda, in the British Virgin Islands, and with the ancient city of Krakow, Poland. Closer to home there's the Smoky Mountain town of Asheville, N.C., and that other city with the same name: Portland, Ore.
Deborah Wakefield, spokeswoman for the Portland Oregon Visitors Association, said she expects the listing to boost visits.
"We see a lot of visitors who walk into our visitors center with either a guidebook or a newspaper in hand," she said. "I know the power of the press is very influential in travel decisions. People just have so many choices. There are so many places to go; a lot of time you need that mention in a list or article to push people over the fence to your destination."
The description of Portland, Maine, is almost gushing.
"A university town (Bowdoin and U Maine) and burgeoning retirement location, Portland has a fantastic mix of culture and education," according to the statement released by the guidebooks company. The statement also praised "an impressive amount of first-rate restaurants," citing Fore

The Okanagan is very beautiful, I have family that live there and when I lived in Kamloops it was just an hour and a half away. It has a lot of nice golf courses and wineries. I would live there if there was work for numba and my nosy, controlling, bitchy grandmother didn't live there. I'd love to go anywhere in Poland as I am half polish and I love cheese, sausage and borcht.

We had a police chief here for 17 years(Mike Chitwood) who was the prototype for "Dirty Harry" He came from Philly where he was the most decorated cop in Philly's history. Anyway, there was a story today about how in his new job in Upper Darby, Pa. the cops are selling t-shirts with his favorite saying on it:

"Not in our town, Scumbag"

They've sold a bunch of them so far. His son is police chief in Daytona Beach, Florida and said he wouldn't mind having a few shirts sent down. His other most noted quote is: " Don’t even think about it ‘Scumbag'"

Here's kind of a cool story. This guy, Bill Dunlop, set sail in a 9ft sailboat from Portland. He left from the pier where the floating restaurant above is docked. He asked me to help him load his boat with food and drinks. What he had me do is take all his canned food and dip it in hot paraffin. That way nothing would spoil. He used 2 liter plastic bottles of Coke and Mountain Dew for ballast. When he finished drinking the bottle, he'd fill it with sea water and put it back. Nobody thought he had a chance in hell of making it, but he did. Later, he tried to sale that 9ft boat around the world. He went missing after making it to Austrailia. Bondi was probably to young to remember it, but it was quite a story for a while. This guy had some major cojones to even attempt it. He told me that he had his boat built so it would do barrel-rolls off the top of the waves he was expecting. He said on a 40-50 foot wave it would flip over about a dozen times.

Sailor Trying to Cross Atlantic in Small Boat

After a sendoff under grey skies, Bill Dunlop spent his first day at sea today in a nine-foot sailboat, heading across the Atlantic.

He is seeking a record for the smallest boat used in a solo Atlantic crossing.

The Wind's Will left a Portland Harbor marina Sunday as 20 large and small vessels tooted horns in salute.

Mr. Dunlop, 40 years old, of Mechanic Falls, Me., said he expects to reach Falmouth, England, in eight to 12 weeks. In 1980, Mr. Dunlop crossed the ocean in a 35-foot sailboat.

His boat is filled with food, survival equipment, extra sails, rope tools and reading matter. Mr. Dunlop's sailboat has a fiber glass hull, and a $16 sextant for navigation. He has a radio, but no backup engine.

How did dipping canned food in wax prevent it from spoiling? Did it just keep the cans from rusting/corroding from the sea water?

All the other "sailors" at the marina would always criticize him(or worse, talk behind his back) after he got thru explaining some technique or idea he was going to use on his solo cruise. They didn't think he could find England by just using "dead reckoning". They were wrong, he knew more about sailing then all the rest of them put together.

They weren't marines, they were just guys that had enough money to put a boat in the water. Weekend sailors. They just couldn't get it that this guy knew what he was talking about. The sailors in England surely got it, they're probably still talking about it. England has a more nautical heritage than the U.S., they understand how hard it is to sail a boat the size of a bathtub across the Atlantic.

last week we had snow and sleet and a nor'easter blow thru. I lost power for three days and the house was freezing cold. Three days later, it's almost 80 degrees. the windows are open and people are wearing shorts and sandals. And there is still snow on the ground and snowbanks in parking lots. Crazy weather or what.

Yeah they come out to the Gold Coast once a year. No one knows a fucking thing about the sport but it's like 1 big party up there. For some reason ladies feel the need to show their breasts for no good reason other than being asked to by 25 pissed guys!

And at the end of the weekend, no one knows who won but if you're single and don't pull a root by Sunday night you are a possible homo sexual

When I finally make my way out there, I'll be sure to look you up. wink.gif

I'd like to do more of the non-touristy kind of stuff and actually experience it for all it's worth. When my wife went to China for a month on a study abroad program, her instructor took her group to all these awesome places that really dug into the many cultures of China. It wasn't a typical experience and it was something that no travel agency would be able to come close to duplicating. She ate lunch with farmers, she hiked up mountain thingies and waterfalls. Her pictures are amazing and her journal is exciting to read. her instructor actually lived in China for some time and met his wife there.

Anyway, that's the kind of experience I'd like ot have when I finally make it out to Hawaii.

Yeah, we did that when we were in Mexico. We took 4-wheelers to Ixtapa and got to stop a few places along the way and got to see some real town, some real farming communities, and then fianlly the tequila distillery, same as you, from plant to the bottle. Lots and lots of bees, though. Here in Sydney and surrounding areas we have had a few big storms over the past fortnight. It has been good to get so much raint to fill our dams up even a little but the devestation has been amazing. The surf has been unrideable. Here are 2 shots, the first a pic of Clovelly beach lookout whish is 2kn around the coast from Bondi. To give you perspective these rocks are 10 to 15m from sea level and this is how high the waves were hitting. The second is a pic of a bulk carrier ship that ran aground in the first of the storms on a Newcastle beach, 2 hours north of sydney.

I had no idea were it was filmed I do however know 2 people that got left out in the water off the coast of cancun for 6 hours before the Mexican boat guides came back to get them .. by that time they had puked and were very ill from the continued wave action and the salt water slapping them in the face ... But now I guess I have to add Australia to the list of No scuba with local's ?

Here in Sydney and surrounding areas we have had a few big storms over the past fortnight. It has been good to get so much raint to fill our dams up even a little but the devestation has been amazing. The surf has been unrideable. Here are 2 shots, the first a pic of Clovelly beach lookout whish is 2kn around the coast from Bondi. To give you perspective these rocks are 10 to 15m from sea level and this is how high the waves were hitting. The second is a pic of a bulk carrier ship that ran aground in the first of the storms on a Newcastle beach, 2 hours north of sydney.

beautiful. That's cool that with so many people crammed onto such a tiny island, that you can still have wide open spaces like that to enjoy.

I think he's a corn farmer.
I dunno where the US bread basket is, but I live in the Canadian one. The Farm Progress Show is on right now and I fear for my life driving amongst those used to driving on backroads with no one else around. Thousands of farmers everywhere.

I wish, I just searched some on a local news site. I don't have water views from my house so to take photos of the storm I would of had to get out in the rain.... fuck that! tongue.gif

It was a while back and the "American" tourists ventured off to places they were not supposed to go. It was one of those 1 in a million cases. If you saw how many people dive off our east coast every year you'd be surprised more didnt get left behind or lost. I have been a few times!

After the storm finishes the big surf lasts for a few days and heaps of people head out in that sort of weather. I waited until the second day so the waves were only 2-3m instead of 5-6m!

When you live within 1 hour of a beach your entire life you get used to shit like that!

We don't get cold winters... but we did have close to three blizzards in 2 months.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_Storms_2006-07

That kinda made me laugh... just ctrl f colorado.

I just know that after all the snow we got, I've never been so sick of it in my life. It made for some good snowboarding though smile.gif.

Now that it's 100 out every other day.. I'm kinda missing that snow.
