Wille Mason plays Rugby League in Australia for my favourite team the Bulldogs. He has harboured some fleeting desire to play NFL, because he is a showman and he says there is no bigger stage worldwide for football...

Could he cut the mustard?

To put in as bluntly as possible: No chance at all. The first reason is the most persuasive: simply too old. Guys that play in the NFL have been playing since they were really young. The only exceptions are receivers, sometimes they are sprinters and runners in school, ie, really really fast. The ones that can do the fastest times, and can catch a football, which are very few, MIGHT get a tryout. At 26, no football knowledge or skill, he's lucky to even get a look by a scout. The NFL is a multi-billion dollar business, run by men who consider an NFL team a "hobby". The athletes that compete at that level are, literally, the best in the world. You can be a number one pick or a Heisman Trophy winner and STILL flame out in the NFL. I think most people, even fans, are misguided in the atheticism and skill that it takes to succeed in pro football. It's literally, off the charts. Look at it this way, there are way more people who graduate with Phd's from M.I.T. or Harvard in any given year than make the NFL. There are more geniuses than NFL players. It's an extremely difficult set of skills that makes a player an NFL caliber player. Personally,I think it's one of the most under -estimated sports, in terms of what it takes to play on a professional team, that there is.

Intersting posts. I think closeups covered most of it. But I would never say "no chance". It's often hard to know how someone will transfer over to a new skillset til they try it. It's not like this guy is a slouch. He is still a world class athlete, in a similar sport(well in the full spectrum of sports it's similar). But whether you like the NFL or not, one has to admit these guys are unreal athletes. Top percentiles for speed, size, strength(and bangin ho's ) I remember a couple years ago Brock Lesner tried out for the Vikings(I think). Now for those who don't know, Lesner was a pro wrestler, which doesn't say much. But before that he excelld at the national level in amateur wrestling. This guy is about 6'4" and 295 pounds. And is an amazing athlete. Extremely strong, agile, fast. Anyway, he barely made the practice squad. It was just too hard to learn the game at that level. Yes he was probably as athletic as the guys he was competing against but they had many years practice on him.
But determination is a powerful thing. I would like to see how he does.
