QUOTE(closeup @ Sep 7 2006, 06:43 PM) You guys didn't read her life is short, just do it post? I remember an episode of the Simpsons where everyone just did whatever they felt like. That's what running out on the field must be like for the people who actually "just do it". Ten seconds of fun followed by ten days of hassle. (Ask Gnappy, I heard he once streaked at the Calgary Rodeo) Yes maybe the Calgary "gay " Rodeo...but not the Stampede

QUOTE(closeup @ Sep 7 2006, 07:11 PM) What's the difference between a rodeo and a stampede? with a rodeo the sheep are tame and willing ...in a stampede it is each man ...err... sheep for himself

Forgive me for my lack of understanding but I can not fathom how anyone can watch American Football/Gridiron? It isn't a bad game, if it went for an hour or so but 1 game lasts 4 hours plus... I mean don't you find the tedium of sitting there between plays for 30 seconds boring as hell?
Reminds me when Homer is off beer for a while and he goes to the baseball with Barney. He says, "you know, I never realised how boring this game is"

Steelers & Dolphins tonight. (Steelers by 7, at least)
One game right, 255 to go. Steelers won by 11. Bondi, it's not boring to have time between plays, this is the time when the offense and defense are strategizing, and so aren't the fans. I guess an analogy would be chess, some people think the game is too slow, but thinking before you make a move is a big part of the game.

I understand WHY they do it and that it is important to their performance... but as a viewer don't thse constant stoppages in play become tiresome and boring? I guess it is just what you are brought up watching

I've heard this more than once. Mostly from women and foreigners. It's hard to answer because they do stop constantly. I think part of it is anticipation, wondering what play is going to be called.Kinda like when you pull the handle on a slot machine; they COULD have it so you know instantly whether you've won or lost, but part of the enjoyment is the anticipation .Probably the same with surfing, plenty of anticipation in that sport. One thing about football is that it's a completely different experience watching it on tv than going to the game. On tv, they show you things you wouldn't see if you were just watching from the stands. And now in the stadiums they have giant Jumbo-tron screens so you can watch replays, to make it more like watching from home. Most guys could sit and watch a baseball game by themselves, but like to get together to watch football. And don't forget the cheerleaders, they need time to pan over to the sidelines so you can check them out. Time to run to the fridge for a beer, take a piss, etc. etc. Betting on football can make any game interesting, no matter which two teams are playing. That's a huge part of the game. I think it's great the NFL has started back up.

Reminds me when Homer is off beer for a while and he goes to the baseball with Barney. He says, "you know, I never realised how boring this game is" I know people will laugh when I say his but Canadian Football is often more exciting than NFL, although I watch both. There is less time between plays and only 3 downs which really speeds up the game as well as a more wide open field. Yeah, I know we don't have the freakish talent of the NFL but it still great football to watch. But Ricky Williams came up here to play this year, didn't perform worth a shit and then broke his hand. Woulda expected more from such a great running back, stoned or otherwise. QUOTE(closeup @ Sep 8 2006, 06:30 AM) I've heard this more than once. Mostly from women and foreigners. It's as easy as going down to your local convenience mart to bet. See my wife isn't a big NFL fan, but I just get her to make some bets with me and all of a sudden she turns into Jane Q Football. Betting makes a good thing better.

I enjoy watching Football if there is nothing better on. I think the Canadian game is better than the american we just don't have the money or exposure the nfl gets The reason the nfl games are so long is the advertising. If you took out all the comercials ( which I think is probably the best part of watching nfl games especially the superbowl) I think the game wouldn't last much more than 1.5 hrs just my thoughts

Not because I don't think I wouldn't enjoy it, simply because it was never on TV. The talent level probably isn't quite as high as the NFL, but that wouldn't turn me off. Doug Flutie was always one of my favorite players. I will admit, the advertising is too much, but since it allows me to watch for free, it's just of those things you need to put up with. The Patriots win alot, so that also adds to my enjoyment.

I love Rugby League and Australian Rules Football but I am sure you guys would find it not as exciting for whatever reason. The one thing you did nail is that it is ALWAYS better at the game. The atmosphere, the watered down beer, the chherleaders! QUOTE(Bobaloo @ Sep 8 2006, 04:21 PM) If you use a stopwatch and actually time game action, you'd get less than a half hour. baseball is worse at like 15-25 minutes, sometimes less. My point exactly... oh well. I do watch the Superbowl occasionally, it screens here on cable. By the end of the game I am so tired of John Madden's voice I dont give a fuck who wins haha

The actual game time is 4 fifteen minute quarters. That's an hour, right there. I guess if you watch diving, the actual time spent diving is less than 2 seconds. When you go to a concert, do you think you're wasting your time if the performer takes a few minutes to talk to the audience instead of just singing his hits. A football game is a lot more than just the game.

If you put on a proper coat of paint you can put on the 2nd coat in about 3 to 6 hours depending on the conditions, now imagine the painters being some of the beautiful women who grace these pages ...I am sure we would all be die hard paint drying watching mother-fuckers!!! http://www.watching-paint-dry.com/

When you go to a concert, do you think you're wasting your time if the performer takes a few minutes to talk to the audience instead of just singing his hits. A football game is a lot more than just the game. I wasn't criticizing the sports I mentioned. You mentioned the game time would be about 1.5 hours. I just added that actual play time is much much less. While the game clock may tick 60 minutes, there's a lot of time being clicked away while there is no action on the field. Actual plays last a few seconds compared to the near near minute it takes to begin the play. Baseball has an even smaller play time to game time ratio. Now, you mentioned diving, and you're absolutely right about that. But that's a different type of action sport, albeit frustrating waiting for the next dive. Now compare those sports to something like soccer. The play time to game time ratio is huge. all that really doesn't matter, though. What people look for in sports is exciting performance. Soccer, while action is near nonstop, can sometimes be boring most of the game while waiting for a big play to develop. Same thing with football and baseball. Boring on the same old plays that get nowhere until a big play happens. Diving is the same way... may seem boring with the same old stuff, but eventually something exciting happens, whether it be a well executed dive, a difficult dive done well, or a complete flop. Same thing with all sports. I guess you can measure a sport's, or game's for that matter, entertainment value by how many excitable moments there are compared to how much lag time in between. And if the event sucks, there's always the commercials. And when that fails, there's always RMM
